Current patch decision guide
When to pick Gan & Mo, when to avoid them, and how to adapt your build.
Gan & Mo are a balanced Mid Mage who wants to delete priority targets in one rotation. Public guide data shows a build centered on Stone of Sorcery, Boots of the Arcane, Scepter of Reverberation, used to farm safely and rotate to side lanes when the wave allows. Pick them when the draft lets Gan & Mo reach targets that aren't built around Butterfly-style answers; avoid when the enemy already stacks shields and magic resist.
Pick Gan & Mo when
- Your team lacks reliable burst on isolated picks and needs single-target finishing damage
- Your team has the structure to use their ability to farm safely and rotate to side lanes when the wave allows, since Gan & Mo delivers consistent damage output and timely roams.
- The enemy draft includes Cirrus, Jing, and Pei, who appear in counter data as matchups Gan & Mo can pressure.
Avoid Gan & Mo when
- You need sustained damage rather than one-shot windows tied to Coupled Blades - Long's cooldown
- Your team needs a jungle pick more than Gan & Mo's specialty, leaving the role unfilled if you commit here.
- The enemy already drafted Butterfly and Sun Ce, who counter data identifies as direct answers to Gan & Mo.

Build decisions
Default mid path
Public build references for Gan & Mo recommend Stone of Sorcery, Boots of the Arcane, Scepter of Reverberation, Sage's Tome, Nebulon Wood, and Savant's Wrath. Use this as the baseline mage plan before adapting to the enemy draft.
Situational item pivots
Spare options listed in build data include Void Staff, Splendor, Sage's Sanctuary, and Destiny. Treat these as situational swaps when the default path is not enough — for example, swapping in defensive items against burst comps or penetration items against stacked armor.
Matchup logic
Versus Butterfly
Butterfly and Sun Ce are flagged in counter data as a direct answer to Gan & Mo. Hold Coupled Blades - Long until their key defensive cooldowns are spent, and avoid forcing one-shot windows into shielded targets.
Versus shielded targets
Heroes with shields or damage reduction blunt Gan & Mo's burst window. Wait for the shield to lapse before committing Coupled Blades - Long, otherwise the combo wastes the cooldown without finishing the kill.
Synergies
Public synergy data lists Cai Yan, Guiguzi, and Dolia as strong partners for Gan & Mo. Plan engages around Cai Yan's setup window, then second-engage with Coupled Blades - Long.
Common mistakes
- Committing Coupled Blades - Long when the target still has a shield, dash, or cleanse available, wasting the cooldown.
- Ignoring Butterfly and Sun Ce on the enemy team when picking fights — counter data flags them as direct answers, so engage timing must respect their cooldowns.
- Greeding farm in mid lane while side lanes get camped — rotation timing matters more than CS lead in most matchups.
Background
Smith and Blade
“Two souls, one body. One love, neverending.”
Gan Jiang is a master swordsmith from the Misty Marshes with an unnatural obsession with swords and blades. His bed-ridden wife Mo Ye threw herself into the forge in a fit of insanity, sacrificing her life to grant him a divine blade. Gan Jiang was filled with regret, but it was too late, and he allowed the sorcery to corrupt him and make him one with the sword. With the two becoming one, the divine blade transformed into his wife's likeness, and now, Gan Jiang and Mo Ye will never be separated again.

"Gan & Mo can deal extremely high damage after activating their Ultimate, but if they miss, they'll be more or less harmless for a short period of time. To alleviate this, we're giving them more chances to deal damage, and allowing them to more freely choose a comfortable attack range."
